Celebrating (the first) Ten Years of Freedom Archives
By Zach | November 6, 2009
Hey folks,
Mark your calendars and make it out to the Freedom Archives 10 Year Anniversary Party Wednesday, November 11th in San Francisco. Claude and the Freedom Archives crew have shown AK Press a lot of solidarity over the years and a bunch of us will be celebrating with them next week.
As you all probably know, AK has co-published numerous projects with Freedom Archives, for all of those and the other great CDs, DVDs, and books produced by Freedom Archives, click here.
Anita Johnson from Hard Knock Radio will be MC’ing and DJ’s Sake-1 and Emancipation will be spinning records.
The party goes from 7:30pm to 2:00am at 33 Ritch Street, SF. It’s a FUNdraiser so bring some cash for the door, the bar, the silent auction, and raffle tickets. “No one turned away for lack of funds,” as usual, but don’t be an ass—your support really does help groups like Freedom Archives thrive. Suggested donations are $5–$50.
See you there!

if i may..i’ve seen show after show and/or benefit after benefit w/their ’sliding scale’, etc., but i feel that the ‘no 1 turned away’ should be stressed MORE so than the prices.
I mean..I personally just usually don’t have $$ to see a lotta things i’d want to..to monetarily support things i’d want to..& know others as well.
I know crowds of shows i’ve been a part of, for instance, would be bigger if people who jus didn’t have cash right then knew they could just tell me that and they could come in.
sure u really just dont know..but arent we trying to educate as many new people as possible each and every time?
blah.

A local group I am a part of (The Alexander Berkman Social Club) holds public meetings where we collect money to go to anarchist groups or individuals. I wanted to advertise “Everyone turned away for lack of funds!” for events (unfortunately not everyone thought it was as witty as I did…). One of the many goals of the group is to collect and spread meager resources. To my knowledge we’ve never turned anyone away but we do stress that we expect people to throw down. I personally wouldn’t mind if someone didn’t want to come to the events because they weren’t willing to cough up a little dough to go toward anarchist initiatives. Those people can voluntarily associate somewhere else.
I just happen to think we should stress a culture of mutual support. Life is atomized and alienating enough so, yeah, show up but bring something to the table: clean up afterward, put away chairs, drive a drunk home.
Let’s practice mutual aid. It makes a difference. -Zach
